Narration
- No sound: check the speaker button at the top of the Play screen, which turns narration on and off, and your device’s volume.
- A card is read by a different voice: cards without recorded narration, including most sets you import, are read by your device’s built-in voice.
Discover and playing offline
- Find new sets in Discover: on iPhone, tap Find more sets at the bottom of your Library; on iPad, tap Discover at the left of the screen.
- Adding a set needs an internet connection. Once it’s in a Library, the set and its narration and pictures are saved on your device, so you can play without Wi-Fi.
- When a set you’ve added gets new or corrected questions, your Library shows Update available. Tap the update button beside it to download the new version.
Family accounts
- Loud Owl works without an account. To add children, open Settings and, under Create a family account, tap Continue with Apple. You’ll agree to what’s saved on the Family privacy screen, choose a 4-digit PIN, and add each child’s nickname, owl color, and age band. A family can have up to six children; add more later in Settings › Family & account › Add a child.
- While a child is playing, grown-up actions ask for your PIN: adding sets from Discover, Scan QR Code, deleting sets, and family settings, which Settings shows as Grown-ups. Links out of the app are turned off in a child’s profile.
- Children see the sets in Discover that are made for their age band. To include sets for older ages, open Settings › Family & account, tap the child, and turn on Show all sets.
- Your family, PIN, and the sets you add from Discover follow you to your other iPhones and iPads when you sign in there with the same Apple ID. Game results, sets you add with Scan QR Code, and whose library each set is in stay on each device.
- Forgot your PIN? Tap Forgot PIN? on the Enter PIN screen, or on Change PIN, and sign in with the Apple ID on your family account to choose a new one.
- See what we keep: Settings › Family & account › Account › Your family’s data.
- Sign out: Settings › Family & account › Account › Sign out. It removes everything the app saved on that device. Your family and the sets you added from Discover stay in your account, and come back when you sign in again. Game results and sets you added with Scan QR Code don’t.
- Delete your account: Settings › Family & account › Account › Delete account, then sign in with Apple to confirm. It deletes everything our server holds for your family and everything the app saved on that device, including question sets and game history. Your other devices are signed out and cleared too.
Importing your own sets
To add a set of your own, tap Scan QR Code, in Settings under Import your own or at the bottom of Discover under Bring your own, and point the camera at a QR code that holds the web address of the set’s file. The app downloads the file from that address and shows what’s in the set before you add it to a Library. Sets from other websites aren’t reviewed by Loud Owl. If you’ve turned off camera access, the scan screen offers Open Settings to turn it back on.
A question set is a JSON file with a name and a list of questions, each with an answer. Everything else is optional:
{
"name": "Our Family Quiz",
"questions": [
{
"question": "What is the largest planet?",
"answer": "Jupiter",
"funFact": "More than 1,000 Earths could fit inside it."
}
]
}
A question can also have a category, a
difficulty (easy, medium, or
hard), and a deepDive to read after the
answer. Put the file on a website anyone can reach, and make a QR code
of its web address. If the app can’t read a set, it says so after the
scan, and nothing is added.
Ages
